It was difficult under Nazi occupation. I am sure everyone kept looking over their shoulder out of fear of arrest for anything; being Jewish, or looking at an occupier in the wrong way. You could be executed 'on-the-spot' by occupiers. After World War II and Soviet occupation moving toward a USSR satellite state, the remaining population would be involved in rebuilding but having enough sustenance remained an issue.

My family were farmers on one side, but things were very difficult and they lived in constant fear of everything, including losing a job....(for people in the cities). the other side of my family was summoned to work for hitler, refused, and were sent to concentration camps and were eventually killed. When communism came in, it wasn't much better. The Poles did not get 'saved" by the Soviets. They were given nothing and lived in fear of the commie regime. But many had regular jobs....carpenters, doctors, etc..... whatever they could do.
